New Orleans vows to lighten up on hookers

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

From the LA Times:

This year, New Orleans is also on track to have the nation’s highest per capita murder rate.

In recent months, police, prosecutors and politicians have taken steps to put fewer minor offenders behind bars, in the hope that will free up resources to attack more serious crime. The initiative culminated in city ordinances passed this month that give officers the option of handing out court summonses to anyone suspected of prostitution or marijuana possession, in lieu of hauling them off to jail.

“For us, it’s a shift. … We don’t need to be arresting people for silly, minor things,” said police Deputy Superintendant Kirk M. Bouyelas.

It’s nice to see they admit to locking people up for “silly minor things”.  If only they could admit that getting high and selling sex shouldn’t be crimes to begin with, their rehabilitation would be complete.

Sex toy freedom fighter opens new store

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Sherri Williams, owner of two Alabama adult stores is opening a third store in a Huntsville building formerly used by a bank which gives the new store the novelty of having a drive-up window similar to neighboring fast food outlets.

Sherri Williams is known for waging a long court battle to get Alabama’s sex toy ban overturned.  The sex toy ban was introduced by State Senator Tom Butler (see the Sex Hysteria Hall of Shame), sailing through the sexually repressed state legislature with virtually no opposition.  Sherri Williams assisted by the ACLU sued to have the law overturned, taking her fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Needless to say, the law withstood the challenge.

It should be noted that Senator Bulter, who has served in the Alabama legislature since 1982, was roundly trounced by Republican Bill Holtzclaw in the 2010 elections.  Whether Holtzclaw is any better remains to be seen, but it’s a certainty that Alabama will continue to defend its reputation for being among the most sexually repressed populations in the country (and probably the world).

To be fair to other states that proudly take repression seriously, it should be pointed out that Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia also have criminal statutes targeting sex toys.

The mark of Satan

Sex offenders in St. Tammany parish, Louisiana were required to post this sign on Halloween or face jail time.  According to nola.com:

State law prohibits convicted sex offenders from distributing candy on Halloween to anyone under the age of 18 or from wearing masks, disguises or hoods during the holiday. Offenders are also instructed not to put up decorations for the holiday, answer their door to trick-or-treaters or leave their porch lights on while children are roaming the neighborhoods.

This is a few days late, but this is the first time I’ve actually seen the required sign so I thought it would be worth posting anyway.  I first wrote about this here.

Porn Star opts out of run against David Vitter

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

As I blogged on April 1, porn star Stormy Daniels was considering a run against Louisiana Senator David Vitter.   She has since changed her mind.  According to theweek.com:

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, had appeared to be preparing for a campaign by repeatedly criticizing the family-values image of Vitter, who was caught in a Washington prostitution ring scandal in 2007. But she concluded the obstacles were too great. “The simple fact that David Vitter has $5 million in his bank account pretty much says it all,” Daniels said in a statement released last week. “Against that shear accumulation of special interest dollars, I have no legitimate means of winning.”

Not to mention that most voters don’t think too highly of porn stars, instead preferring to elect sleazy two-faced patrons of brothels in New Orleans and Washington DC.  Like, for example, David Vitter.

Is govmt coming between you and your doctor?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The answer is yes if you live in Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas or Virginia.

According to blackbookmag.com:

Manhattan’s East Side gynecologist, Dr. Scheinfeld, is the first American doctor to sell sex toys in his office.

Even aside from whether patients appreciate it, selling sex toys is illegal in the eight states listed.

I know what you were thinking when you saw the title of this post, though.  You probably thought I was going to talk about the federal ban on medical marijuana.  And, you’re absolutely right, of course.

Porn star to run for U.S. Senator?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Adult entertainer, Stormy Daniels plans to announce on April 15th whether or not she will challenge incumbent Louisiana Senator David Vitter who was supposedly a client of “D.C. Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey’s prostitution service in Washington, D.C.

New movie: Canal Street Madam

Friday, March 19th, 2010

A new documentary movie called Canal Street Madam coming out this year is about a Jeanette Maier and her family run brothel in New Orleans.  I haven’t seen it, but I did add it to my netflix queue.

THE CANAL STREET MADAM from Cameron Yates on Vimeo.

From what I gather, Ms Maier was in the business by choice  and is an advocate for legalization of prostitution.

Women having wilder sex, watching more porn

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

According to a survey of 4200 women, they are having sex less often, but getting crazier when they do have it.

But, even more interesting is this:

For instance, around 76 per cent of women now admit to using porn – a ten per cent rise on the two-thirds of girls who admitted to watching porn with their partners in a survey last year.

I’ll bet the anti-porn crusaders would be disappointed to hear that.  And given their contention that increased use of porn results in relationship problems, they might be even more disappointed to hear that just the opposite is happening:

Last year’s survey, by website Netmums, showed more than half weren’t happy in the bedroom, but this year more than 60 per cent claimed to enjoy fulfilling sex.

And finally:

More than half of the women surveyed used sex toys in the bedroom to add a buzz of excitement.

I wonder how many of those surveyed live in states stuck in the Dark Ages where sex toys are illegal (Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia).

Prostitutes as sex offenders

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

According to colorlines.com, cops and prosecutors in New Orleans are targeting prostitutes with a new strategy of charging them under an 1805 law against “unnatural copulation” which lands them on the sex offender registry.

Of the 861 sex offenders currently registered in New Orleans, 483 were convicted of a crime against nature, according to Doug Cain, a spokesperson with the Louisiana State Police. And of those convicted of a crime against nature, 78 percent are Black and almost all are women.

The drug war has been a priority since the 70s and most people are questioning whether it can be won.  The war against prostitution has been going on for a couple hundred years (just in the U.S.) and people rarely question whether it does more harm than good.

I’m pretty certain that the sex offender registry was not invented to protect people from prostitutes.  It’s bad enough that the government (and most voters) believe it’s their business to tell us when, where, and under what circumstances we’re allowed to have sex, without using an out-dated law as a cudgel against a target that the sex offender registry was never intended for.

You will see more articles about attacks on prostitution in this blog, especially as new aggressive  efforts to vilify (or rescue) them seem to pop up every day.  Anyone who claims to care about women should be furious that prostitutes would be equated to child molesters.
