Trafficking warnings for 2014 Commonwealth games overblown

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Last June a rescue industry group was warning about predicted increases in trafficking of women during the 2014 Commonwealth games to be held in Scotland.

From the BBC article:

Glasgow Community and Safety Services (GCSS) manages the Trafficking Awareness Raising Alliance (Tara).

The GCSS submission states: “There is concern that the Olympic Games in London and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow may increase the threat of human trafficking into the UK and preventative measures need to be put in place now.

Of course, preventative measures includes demands for increased funding.

“There is evidence to suggest that trafficking and prostitution increases in places where large sporting events are being held, e.g. 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Cup in Germany.”

Actually, if there is evidence of anything, it’s that predictions of trafficking for large sporting events have been ludicrously exaggerated.

And, according to emigrate.co.uk, the predictions are again exaggerated:

Just recently, a top Scots detective claimed that there is no sign at all that human trafficking will increase when Glasgow hosts the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Of course, the article then goes on to repeat the claims from the rescue industry.   I guess we should be happy that they aren’t claiming tens of thousands of hookers will be flooding the area.
