Facebook breast feeding paranoia?

Not sure what to make of this story about a woman artist, Kate Hansen, who claims that Facebook is deleting pictures she’s been posting of women breast feeding babies.

What was supposed to be images celebrating pregnancy and motherhood created by a Courtenay artist are now considered hateful, threatening or obscene by one of largest social networking sites in the world.

Last week, she received an e-mail from The Facebook Team noting: “you posted an item that violated our terms of use, and this item has been removed. Among other things, content that is hateful, threatening or obscene is not allowed, nor is content that attacks an individual or group. Continued misuse of Facebook’s features could result in your account being disabled.”

But the story also says that Facebook does not delete breast feeding images:

During a recent interview with CBC Radio, which contacted a Facebook representative, Hansen said the social networking site representative noted they do not delete breastfeeding images.

Of course, its highly likely that the people deleting the pictures and the people making the statements are not accurately representing Facebook policy.

“I will continue to post images and risk my account being deleted; the risk is worth it,” she added.

I doubt she need worry about her account being deleted.  Back when I was a member it was impossible to delete an account even if you wanted to.  I’m pretty sure their advertising dollars are heavily dependent on membership numbers, so the door going in opens much easier than the door going out.

The world is full of people who don’t think images of breast feeding are appropriate for public display.  I wonder if Ms Hansen would claim that pictures of breast feeding are acceptable, but pictures that show other kinds of nudity aren’t?  If so, then she’s really no different than the people she’s complaining about.   She’s just drawing the line in a slightly different place.

You could always contact me and find out! I’m not that hard to find, you know. :p

Yep. I could have, but as the article says, I am no longer a member of facebook and wasn’t accusing you of anything. I was merely speculating to make a point. Having now looked at your site, I I gather you are not averse to nudity.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
